Receiving Communion from the Cup
Since it has been some time since we have been able to receive the Precious Blood from the cup at Mass, a brief review is helpful. If you have received your First Holy Communion and are able to receive, come forward in the usual manner and receive the Body of Christ in the consecrated host. Then move to the minister of the cup. She/he will say, “The Blood of Christ.” Again bow your head and answer, “Amen.” The minister will present the cup to you. Take it with both hands and drink the Blood of Christ. Then return the cup to the minister. She/he will wipe the inner and outer edge of the cup with the purificator and turn the cup in preparation for the next person.
Please know that receiving the Precious Blood from the cup is not required. If you are immunocompromised or have health reasons keeping you from the cup, you are still receiving the Body and Blood of Christ when receiving only the consecrated host. And definitely if you are feeling at all unwell, please don’t receive from the cup out of kindness and deference to those after you.
